Number One with a Bullet

Billboard Magazine charts popular music rankings in its Hot 100 list. The term “with a bullet” means that the record’s popularity is accelerating in terms of sales or airtime. The term has a less than happy connotation for the United States today, as we surpassed both China and Italy in the total number of reported cases. We also continue to have the fastest growth rate of any major country.

Four days ago, just looking at a simple extrapolation based on the growth in reported cases since the beginning of March, I predicted this would happen by tomorrow. Since I started tracking the growth rate earlier this month, we have gone from 10th in the world to number 1. As a country, we are still not taking this virus seriously enough. We need to do more to slow the spread of this disease.

The vast majority of our reported cases are in New York. A large part of this is due to more testing in New York, so the actual count in the rest of the country is still under reported. However, Tennessee and Alabama are increasing rapidly even by this measure. For both states the number of reported cases is doubling every two to three days. Both states are closely tracking one another, as displayed in the graph below.

Both are graphs are through today. The graphs are not equal length because they start the day that the number of cases reached at least 1 per 1 million people in the population.
