Alabama Leads the Nation in New COVID-19 Deaths, but the Figure is Misleading

According to data reported by John Hopkins, Alabama currently leads the nation in new COVID-19 deaths per capita. Over the last week, Alabama has averaged 111 deaths per day (2.26 per 100,000 people), slightly ahead of Arizona (2.20), followed by Pennsylvania, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Nevada. However, the statistics for Alabama are distorted, as the state’s health department added numerous deaths dating back to November 11th. Indeed, the state’s health department claims that the current COVID-19 mortality rate for the state is the lowest it has been since last Spring.

However, that does not mean all is well with the Yellowhammer state. Al.com reports that crematoriums are running round the clock because of a large number of deaths due to COVID-19 (as well as homicides and drug overdoses). Alabama currently ranks near the bottom in per capita vaccine distribution, as it is currently ahead of only Hawaii, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Also, Alabama still ranks near the top in COVID-19 test positivity rate, indicating not enough people are getting tested.
