There is a screen shot of a data analysis that purports to show that deaths in the United States for 2020 is about the same as deaths for 2018. See the following graph for an example.
If you look at the sources for the information, they both claim the CDC as their source, but the problem is that the two sources are not consistent in their measurement. I downloaded a spreadsheet from the CDC that consistently reports mortality figures from 2014 through the end of November, 2020. When looking at the mortality data through the end of November for 2014-2020 we see a big jump in 2020:
The increase in U.S. deaths from 2019 to 2020 is over 260,000, about the same as the current death count due to COVID-19. This difference is understated, as there is a lag in reporting over the last three weeks. If you compare deaths through the first week of November (likely a more accurate comparison due to the lag), the difference is 316,000 deaths. If you compare apples-to-apples, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the mortality rate in 2020.
